The Beautiful Art of Letting Go: What Autumn Teaches Us About Surrender, Healing & New Beginnings 🍂

6 min read

An invitation to release what no longer serves you, reconnect with yourself, and trust the changing seasons of your life.

There is something about autumn that has always felt deeply sacred to me. The crispness in the air, the changing colors, the way the trees become almost impossibly beautiful just before they release their leaves. And I've been thinking about that lately. How effortlessly nature seems to surrender. How a tree doesn't fight to hold on to the leaves that once made it beautiful. It doesn't question whether it will bloom again. It doesn't desperately cling to what was. It simply responds to the season it's in. And I wonder how much more peaceful our lives could become if we learned to do the same.

Because here's what I've come to understand about healing, transformation, and this beautiful, messy experience of being human:

Sometimes the most courageous thing we can do is stop holding on.

What If Letting Go Isn't About Losing Something?

I think we've been taught to associate letting go with loss. Letting go of a relationship, an identity, a dream that didn't unfold the way we imagined, or the version of ourselves we worked so hard to become. And yes, sometimes letting go involves grief. Sometimes it hurts. Sometimes it feels unfair. Sometimes we're being asked to release something we never wanted to lose in the first place. But what if letting go isn't always about losing? What if letting go is also about making room? Room for more joy, more peace, more possibility, more authenticity, and more of YOU.

I spent many years believing that healing meant working harder on myself. Understanding more, processing more, fixing more, searching for the next breakthrough that would finally bring me to the other side. And while that work has been incredibly valuable, somewhere along the way, I began to recognize that healing wasn't always about doing more. Sometimes it was about allowing. Allowing myself to be exactly where I was. Allowing my story to be what it was. Allowing myself to stop fighting the parts of my life I couldn't change. And perhaps most importantly, allowing myself to experience joy without feeling like I had to earn it through more healing.

That realization changed something in me because I don't want to spend my entire life preparing to live. I want to LIVE. I want to experience the fullness of being human. I want to laugh, dance, create, love, explore, and enjoy the life that's happening right here, right now. Not someday when everything is figured out. Not when I've healed every wound or made peace with every chapter of my story. Now. And perhaps that's one of the greatest invitations of autumn. To recognize what has served its purpose, honor it for what it was, and gently allow ourselves to move forward.

The Trees Don't Apologize for Changing

Have you ever noticed how unapologetic nature is? The trees don't ask permission to change colors. They don't compare themselves to the tree standing next to them. They don't wonder if they're releasing their leaves too early or too late. They simply honor their own rhythm. And isn't that such a beautiful reminder for us? We are allowed to change. We are allowed to outgrow old versions of ourselves. We are allowed to change our minds, redefine success, create new dreams, and release expectations that no longer feel aligned with who we're becoming.

We are also allowed to move through seasons of expansion and seasons of rest, and we don't have to make any of those seasons wrong. Sometimes life is blooming. Sometimes life is shedding. Sometimes life is quietly preparing for something we cannot yet see. Every season belongs, even the uncomfortable ones, even the ones that ask us to surrender, and even the ones where we don't yet know what's coming next.

I think so much of our suffering comes from resisting the season we're actually in. We want clarity when life is asking us to be patient. We want expansion when our bodies are asking us to rest. We want to know exactly how everything will unfold because uncertainty can feel so uncomfortable. But what if we stopped trying to rush ourselves into the next season? What if we trusted that there is wisdom in the one we're experiencing right now?

Letting Go Is Not Just a Thought. It's an Embodied Experience.

This is something I feel especially passionate about in my work with embodiment, somatic practices, and nervous system awareness. We can intellectually understand that it's time to release something and still feel ourselves holding on. We can tell ourselves we've forgiven, we've accepted, we've moved forward, and yet our bodies may still respond with tension, fear, sadness, or the instinct to protect ourselves. Because letting go isn't always something we can think our way through. Sometimes we need to feel our way through it.

We need opportunities to slow down, notice what's happening within us, and gently reconnect with the present moment. That might look like placing your hands over your heart and taking a few intentional breaths. It might look like going for a walk, moving your body, dancing, crying, resting, or simply sitting beneath a tree and allowing yourself to feel. And sometimes releasing doesn't mean making a feeling disappear. It means creating enough space within ourselves to experience that feeling without being completely consumed by it.

We don't have to force ourselves to let go. We can learn to soften our grip. There is a difference, and that difference can be incredibly powerful. When we approach ourselves with compassion instead of pressure, we begin to create a different relationship with our emotions, our experiences, and the stories we've been carrying. We begin to recognize that we can honor what happened without allowing it to define every moment of what happens next.

What Are You Still Carrying?

As we move through this beautiful fall season, I want to invite you into a little curiosity. Not judgment. Not another self-improvement assignment. Just curiosity. What are you carrying into this new season that perhaps doesn't need to come with you? Maybe it's an old story about who you are. Maybe it's the belief that you should be further along by now. Maybe it's resentment, disappointment, comparison, perfectionism, or the need to control how everything unfolds. Maybe it's an identity you once needed but no longer fits. Or maybe it's the pressure to constantly become a better version of yourself instead of learning to love the person you already are.

And what if you didn't have to figure out how to release it all today? What if you could simply begin by acknowledging it? By noticing what feels heavy. By asking yourself what still belongs and what you're ready to set down. Because awareness creates possibility, and sometimes the smallest moment of awareness becomes the doorway to something entirely new.

I also want to remind you that letting go doesn't mean forgetting. It doesn't mean pretending something didn't matter, dismissing your grief, or forcing yourself into forgiveness before you're ready. Sometimes letting go simply means accepting.

🍂 Guided Meditations to Support the Energy of Fall

In honor of this beautiful season of change, I've created guided meditations to support the energy of fall and all that it invites us to experience. Autumn is such a powerful reminder of the natural rhythms of life, the beauty of surrender, and the importance of creating space for what comes next. These meditations are an invitation to slow down, reconnect with your body, ground yourself in the present moment, and gently release what you no longer need to carry.

Through breathwork, visualization, grounding, and somatic awareness, my intention is to offer you a space where you can soften, feel supported, and reconnect with your own inner wisdom. Whether you're moving through a season of transition, navigating uncertainty, or simply craving a little more peace and stillness, these practices are here to meet you exactly where you are.

One of these offerings is my 20-Minute Fall Guided Meditation for Letting Go, Surrender & New Beginnings, inspired by the beautiful way nature releases and makes room for the next season. My hope is that these meditations become a little sanctuary for you throughout the fall. A place to return to yourself, honor what you're feeling, and remember that you don't have to force the next chapter of your life.

🍁 I invite you to take 20 minutes just for YOU. Find a cozy spot, grab your favorite blanket, put on your headphones, and allow me to guide you through a beautiful journey of grounding, releasing, and receiving. You don't need to do anything, accomplish anything, or figure anything out. Simply show up as you are and give yourself permission to BE.

And if someone you love is moving through a season of change, please share this meditation with them. Sometimes the most beautiful gift we can offer someone is a little space to breathe, soften, and remember that they are supported.

With love,

Julie 🤍
